Nothing helps you feel more alive than noticing the first signs of spring. Flowers poke their heads out for the first time. The trees start budding; new life is everywhere. And then out of nowhere comes a blast of winter; cold, wind, snow - it reminds you that winter isn’t through yet.
And no matter how you fight it, the winter blues set in.
Of course, studies show that people farther north have more trouble with the winter blues than those of us who live in the south. There’s even a name for it - Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, and it impacts up to 9 percent of us depending on the time of year.
If you’ve found yourself hunkering down a bit more than you’d like, binging on more Netflix than you can stand, maybe it’s time to do something to fight off those winter blues.
Tai Chi
Tai chi is a nonimpact, slow motion exercise that anyone can do. Its purpose is to bring self-awareness and mindfulness to the forefront. It can help you improve your flexibility, balance, and muscle strength. You might see it being offered in more locations, including your gym, because there is increasing evidence that shows how beneficial this artform is at preventing health problems.
Grow Something
Gardening is a great way to help alleviate stress. You don’t have to wait for spring to head outside and plant; you can easily start a garden in your home. Herb gardens can be grown from anywhere, try oregano, basil, chives, rosemary, thyme, and parsley. Consider bringing in seasonal flowers; tulip bulbs and daffodils are perfect choices in the spring.
Try New Meals
Now that you have herbs growing in your garden, how about using them in a meal? There’s nothing better than walking into your home and smelling comfort food ready to eat. Pull out a crockpot and have chilis or stews. Try the new InstaPot and pick out a few recipes to try. Select recipes rich in vegetables, herbs, and spices to help you stay healthy too.
Plan a Game Night
If you’ve been spending too much time alone, have a group of friends over for game night. Card games can be easily taught to people of all ages. If you know your group well, try party games like Pictionary or Trivial Pursuit. This might just be something you keep in place on Friday nights all through the year.
Volunteer
Of course, nothing feels better when you have the winter blues than getting out of your house. Try volunteering in your local community. Whatever your interests, you can find a way to give some of your time. Not only will you be doing some good for your neighbors, but you might make a new friend or two as well.
Spring is just around the corner. But until then, do something new to fight away the blues.
