When most of us set exercise goals, we have very specific reasons in mind. We want to lose a few pounds. We want to look good for a reunion or a vacation. We want to improve our health.
All are great reasons to become more active in your life. But did you know there’s another benefit too? Your skin will thank you for your new routine as well.
Every time you work out and work up a sweat, your heart pumps oxygenated blood throughout your body. This invigorates your cells and gives you a nice, healthy glow.
The more you work out, the more you’ll maintain healthy levels of the stress-related hormone called cortisol. When people have more stress in their lives, cortisol levels rise. This creates skin breakdown, and can allow fine lines, wrinkles, even sagging skin to occur earlier in your life.
But a steady supply of cortisol helps support production of collagen. And that added boost of protein helps create healthier, firmer, more supple skin.
Working out also allows the blood to flow freer, to oxygenate the cells as they move through your body. As they move, they help draw out toxins that settle into the pores of your skin. Working out allows you to sweat these toxins out, giving you smoother, healthier skin. If you’ve had a problem with adult acne, this is a surefire way to clear it up.
If you do have skin related problems, be sure to take extra care of it before and after your workouts. Cleaning it and taking off makeup beforehand can allow your pores to breathe during exercise. You should also clean the sweat away after. Use gentle, fragrance-free cleaners, and follow up with a good moisturizer.
Of course, it’s not just your skin that will benefit. Your hair will benefit too. Improved blood flow also helps keep your hair stronger and healthier. Exercise reduces stress, which helps stimulate blood flow and provides more nutrients to your hair follicles. Lower stress means less dry, brittle hair. Improved circulation can add shine back into your hair.
No matter what your reason for sticking to an exercise routine, the important part is to do it on a regular basis. Try adding yoga in the morning, or a 30 minute walk at lunch. Even a little bit can give you results you can see.
