What do you do as the temperatures drop and the fall leaves start to turn color? I love pulling out my favorite sweaters, sitting in front of a fire, and smelling the scents of my favorite candles.
Yet if you’re not selecting the right candles, you may be getting more than you bargained for. Certain wax and wicks can pose health risks.
Candles are as old as human civilization. Early candles were made from animal tallow and plants. Today, candles are often created from paraffin, which is a petroleum byproduct. This is a toxic product which can impact your health.
According to a study by the EPA, candles can emit all kinds of harmful chemicals, including lead and formaldehyde. Do you really want that in your home’s air supply? Do you really want your family breathing in those toxic chemicals?
Luckily, there is an alternative. Before you bring your next candle home, check for these.
Wax
Beware candles that list only one ingredient. They are often blended and can contain harmful chemicals. Candles are usually made from wax, soy, animals, or insects. Other ingredients can include fragrance, color, or modifiers to add to the burning characteristics. Look for a pure, vegetable-based candle without added scents or pigmentation. If you do want scent added to your candle, be sure it’s 100 percent pure essential oil.
Wick
Most candle wicks are made from metal, cotton, or a blend of the two. The metal is designed for stability; to keep the wick burning and standing straight. While the EPA banned the use of lead in candle wicks back in 1974, it is still found in trace in some candles. If it’s in your candle wick, it will contaminate your indoor air.
While candles are beautiful and add ambiance to your home, safety is always a concern. If you love candles and wish to use them, just be sure they are made from beeswax with no artificial colors or additives, are fragrance-free or only use essential oils, and have a cotton based wick. Choose reputable companies where you know the candle was made from the best ingredients possible.
