Every year, improving our health tops the list of New Year’s resolutions. But studies show that less than 8 percent of us will ever see that through.
The reason? Most of us are too vague for our resolutions to do any good. “Get healthy” may be something to aspire to, but what does that really mean? Being vague doesn’t give you anything to strive for. The more details you put into your goals, the better chance you have of accomplishing them.
Want to upgrade your health this year? Try one of these goals instead.
Be Grateful
Are you glad 2017 is behind us? Want to make 2018 a less stressful year? Start with gratitude. Instead of focusing in on how the negative is impacting you - I’m stressed, I’m tired, I’m unhappy - focus on positivity instead. Begin each morning by making a list of the things you are grateful for. It will give you a more positive outlook for your day.
Be Active
Make this a daily goal. How can you add activity to your life every day? Take up an exercise class at the gym. (Haven’t joined a gym? Do it now!) Go for a walk around your neighborhood. Hike on the weekends. You can look at Meetup for ideas. Or check out a community board at the local coffee house. Being active not only can help you be in better physical shape, but it can also introduce you to new people too.
Be Calm
Hygge is sweeping the nation; we’ve even talked about it here. If you aren’t obsessed with this trend, give it a try. This isn’t about being lazy; it’s about taking time for yourself. Consciously select things that make you happy; that keep you warm and comfortable. Use these moments to get in tune with yourself.
Be Nourishing
Do you rush through your morning and evening routines with barely a thought? Slow it down. Try redecorating your bathroom to make it an inviting retreat you enjoy spending time in. Take down that stark white shower curtain and add your favorite color. A lighted candle can add ambiance. A bouquet of flowers can help you breathe deep. And don’t forget to invest in spa-like products. Body scrubs, masks, even essential oils can help transform you into a better place any time you choose.
Be Present
When you’re running, you think about work. When you’re at work, you think about a relationship. Ever feel like you’re in a vicious cycle where your mind wanders to other things? Make this the year you become more present with each of your actions. With any activity you take on, remind yourself to stay in the moment. Focus on what you’re doing and how to make it better. Not only will you feel better, but those around you will notice the difference too.
